What is a hernia in children?
A pediatric hernia happens when tissue or part of the intestine pushes through a weak area in the abdominal wall. Inguinal hernias appear as a bulge in the groin or scrotum, often more visible when the child cries or strains. Umbilical hernias show near the belly button.
Unlike some umbilical hernias that close on their own, inguinal hernias in children usually need surgical repair because they rarely resolve spontaneously and can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
